Beyond that, the weight of words <\/strong><strong>doesn\u2019t matter nearly as much as the context<\/strong><strong>ual association<\/strong><strong> of your words<\/strong><strong>. <\/strong>We\u2019ll discuss word association later in this article.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"emphasis-matters\"><strong>Emphasis Matters<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<p><strong>What is more likely to impact the weight of a keyword in a prompt is the use of emphasis punctuation.<\/strong> Check out <a href=\"https:\/\/promptphantom.com\/how-do-you-emphasize-words-in-stable-diffusion-prompts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">my guide on emphasis<\/a> to learn about that topic. But, in short, you can tell Stable Diffusion to focus more attention on a certain word or phrase by putting it in parentheses. By doing this, it likely won\u2019t matter where that emphasized word appears in the prompt order.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"prompt-length-matters-too\">Prompt Length Matters, Too<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>That is, unless it\u2019s at the very end of a very long prompt. That\u2019s because Stable Diffusion, by default, has a limit on how many \u201ctokens\u201d can appear in a prompt. So if your prompt has too many words and punctuation marks, then the AI will eventually cut off your prompt at a certain length. I have <a href=\"https:\/\/promptphantom.com\/how-long-should-a-prompt-be-for-stable-diffusion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">an article all about<\/a> prompt lengths and the cut off number as well.<\/p>\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-should-go-first-in-a-prompt\">What Should Go First in a Prompt?<\/h1>\n\n\n<p>So what words should appear at the beginning of your prompt? Whichever words are the most important for an accurate rendering, I suppose. This will depend on the subject matter and the medium you want to emulate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>The first noun mentioned can easily become the dominant keyword of a prompt, so I recommend that you start off your prompt by mentioning either the primary subject or specifying the art medium you want. <\/strong>If you start with a word that you did not intend to have dominance in the image, then you may be disappointing with the resulting art.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"word-order-examples\">Word Order Examples<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s look at some examples. Our prompt will be about a portrait of a woman. In the first prompt, we\u2019ll put \u201cyoung woman\u201d as the first key phrase of the prompt and specify \u201cportrait\u201d at the end. In the second version, we\u2019ll move \u201cportrait\u201d to the beginning of the prompt. Notice that, for the prompt starting with \u201cportrait\u201d, the background and hair have a more photo-like quality and dept of field. <\/strong>I suspect that the AI closely associates \u201cportrait\u201d with \u201cphotography\u201d and, since we mentioned that word first, it pulled more photo-like elements into the generations<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll also notice that the color blue dominated the images. It caused her eyes to also appear blue in every instance. If a keyword is in parentheses, it\u2019s going to be weighted more regardless of it\u2019s location in the prompt. But Stable Diffusion just didn\u2019t care. It say the heavily weighted phrase \u201cblue eyes\u201d at the very end and added blue to the subject\u2019s clothing and even hair in some places!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lesson here: order is not that important. Any internet guru who claims otherwise is probably not testing the software out enough.<\/p>\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"prompt-associations-are-important\">Prompt Associations are Important!<\/h1>\n\n\n<p><strong>After testing many different prompts, I\u2019ve found that the AI\u2019s understanding of a word or phrase matters more than the order of words. You can use the same keywords in a variety of orders and still get a very similar output image.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if you ask Stable Diffusion for something absent in it\u2019s training data, it won\u2019t matter what order you put the words in&#8230;your output image likely won\u2019t match your prompt very accurately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>That\u2019s because Stable Diffusion <\/strong><strong>can\u2019t actually think for itself; it\u2019s just a statistical mapping of keywords to images<\/strong><strong>. <\/strong>The training for this software went something like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Internet images were fed into the training computer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Each image also had keywords tags linked with them<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The computer associated those keywords with the way that their corresponding images looked<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It therefore \u201clearned\u201d what an image is probably going to look like if it has a certain keyword phrase<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"syntax-isnt-very-important\">Syntax Isn\u2019t Very Important<\/h2>\n\n\n<p><strong>But no AI art software is reading your prompt and consciously understanding the syntax of your sentence. It\u2019s associating and mapping words together (like data points) based on the probability of them appearing together in the training data.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you told me \u201cdraw a woman with green eyes and a blue sweater\u201d, then my brain knows to break down your sentence based on English language syntax into the following chunks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>a woman<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>who has green eyes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and is wearing a blue sweater<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But Stable Diffusion isn\u2019t reading the sentence and making intuitive decisions on how to chunk up those words. It\u2019s going to mix and match any words you write into pairs that make sense based on it\u2019s dataset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>So <\/strong><strong>don\u2019t write full sentences describing the scene you want to see. Stable Diffusion doesn\u2019t care about sentence structure, it just looks for keywords that it knows.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"common-word-associations\">Common Word Associations<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s look again at the topic of a \u201cblue sweater\u201d. Both of those words are pretty common, so it\u2019s likely that a few images in the training data had the term \u201cblue sweater\u201d associated with them. The hierarchy of negative prompts showed even less correlation than the order of positive prompt words.<\/p>\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"conclusion\">Conclusion<\/h1>\n\n\n<p><strong>It\u2019s recommended that you place your most important keywords first in a Stable Diffusion prompt.
